PUSHING DAISIES Sweeps Spoilers

Pushing Daisies: Girth (4)The newest issue of TVGuide Magazine is dedicated to November Sweeps Spoilers so I had to quick jump on and tell all of you what they have to say about our favorite show, PUSHING DAISIES.

In an effort to grow its audience, Daisies will be pushing up surreal plot twists in sweeps. The horror movie-esque Halloween episode (“Girth”), airing October 31st, delves into the backstory of pie-shop waitress Olive (Kristin Chenoweth) and her previous incarnation as, of all thingss, a horse jockey.

“Someone’s killing people from her past,” says creator Bryan Fuller,”and she’s on the list.”

In another episode, pie baker/life restorer Ned (Lee Pace) discovers that one of hte dead guys he wakes up was killed by on of his four wives, who are all dog breeders. The case resonates with Ned and the childhood sweetheart he resurrected from the dead, Chuck (Anna Friel), who can never touch again. Teases Fuller, “Will they be forced to be polygamous because of the circumstances in their relationship?”

Paul Reubens pops up on November 14th as “an olfactory expert who smells something very different about Chuck,” Fuller says. “He’ll be our version of the nosy reporter.”

SNL vet Molly Shannon appears in a later episode as a woman who opens a saltwater taffy store across from Ned’s pie shop. Expect a War of the Roses style rivalry to develop between the two as they try to put each other out of business.

PUSHING DAISIES Debate: Jim Dale’s Narration

Published by Ned under Polls

Howdy PUSHING DAISIES fans, Ned (dan.) here with something for all of us to chew on for a while. It’s our first Pushing Daisies Debate.

The topic of debate is the NARRATION and whether it adds or detracts from the brilliance of the show. I bring it up because Chuck (Kath) and I realized that we’ve had this discussion with numerous people over the past three weeks who are either in love with or turned off by the narration.

I’m typically a person that doesn’t want much narration with my narrative. It’s often used for exposition or to cover something that the actor or the writer couldn’t achieve on their own within any given scene. It’s often a sign of laziness or more commonly to dumb it down for the masses.

I in no way think this applies to Pushing Daisies. To me, the narration is an additional character. It adds layers to each character, it often takes a scene and moves it from fantastic to surreal while always accentuating the heart of the show. The language, the pattern of speech, the choice words used makes my mind explode in its eloquence and enormity often putting me into a sugar coma from it’s sweet googly goodness…

Most of the time...

While watching the third episode, The Fun in Funeral, my partner Jon had finally been pushed too far with the narration. He understood it in the pilot and found it charming but as the weeks have gone on, he’s felt it takes over a scene and often detracts from what the actors should be conveying. To quote him this past Wednesday, “Let the actors ACT — they have all these incredible talents but refuse to let them do their job.”

This made me sit back and think for a second. I rewatched the episode and realized that there are moments when the narration does take over a scene. There are times when Jim Dale cuts into an emotional beat to tell us what Lee Pace or Anna Friel are conveying at the same moment without words. Every actor on the show has been granted to gift of incredible facial expression which also includes impeccible use of the pause. There’s something to be said about letting the scene sit and breath; letting the silence do the talking which often can take a scene from great to frak-tastic!

Sadly, sometimes those are the exact moments where Jim Dale’s narration comes in. As much as I hate to admit it, there are moments in this almost flawless show where less is more.

This hands down is the #1 conversation I have about Pushing Daisies with my co-workers and friends. I’m wondering what you guys think and if you feel that while you still absolutely adore the narration, there are moments when they could dial it down?

Discuss in the comments please.

Pushing Daisies Ratings for “The Fun in Funeral”

PUSHING DAISIES is holding somewhat steady with just a little drop off this week. Come on Daisy Pushers, we need to see an increase in viewers from week to week. Get out there and spread the word!!

Pushing Daisies “The Fun in Funeral” ratings: 9.75M

NBC’s established Deal or No Deal was the most-watched show at 8 p.m. (with its best rating among adults 18-49 since December 11, 2006), but week three of ABC’s Pushing Daisies led among adults 18-49. Take a look:

Wednesday 8 p.m.
Deal or No Deal (NBC)
Viewers: 12.29 million (#1), A18-49: 3.1 rating/9 share (#2)

Pushing Daisies (ABC)
Viewers: 9.75 million (#2), A18-49: 3.6/10 (#1)

While certainly not a big it, it looks like Pushing Daisies is settling in for a respectable run as the ABC Wednesday anchor.

Lee Pace Has The Magic Touch

Lee Pace has the magic touch in ABC’s new drama `Pushing Daisies’
by Kinney Littlefield

Relaxing on the set of his critically praised series, “Pushing Daisies,” Pace taps the air teasingly with his forefinger. It’s how Pace’s character, Ned, makes others live or die with a single stroke on the darkly whimsical ABC drama.

It’s also how Pace keeps British actress Anna Friel, his lively co-star, in line during long production hours. Friel plays Ned’s longtime love, Charlotte “Chuck” Charles.

“When Anna acts up on set, I just touch her like this,” Pace said, pointing a magic finger.

The finger-tap is a joke on Ned and Chuck’s deadly dilemma on “Pushing Daisies” airing on Wednesday night. In the show’s pilot, Ned resurrected Chuck after she was murdered. Now they live together. If Ned touches Chuck once more — directly, skin-on-skin — she’s back in a casket, pronto.

“Just sitting together in a car, it’s life or death stakes for them,” Pace said of the seemingly doomed (or at least physically frustrated) couple. “Every day when we block scenes, I think, `Now how should we hold our bodies?’”

In fact, the physical intimacy of Ned and Chuck is carefully chaperoned on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, especially by executive producer Barry Sonnenfeld (”Men in Black”), who also directs the series.

“Barry’s always going, `Ooops! Don’t you dare touch Anna,’” Friel said. “It’s hard, trying to fit together into a tight two-shot.”
