Episode 1.1: PUSHING DAISIES Premiere

Original Airdate: October 3, 2007
Summary: Ned, a mild-mannered baker of fabulous pies, discovered as a child that he had a unique gift. Ned had the ability to return someone dead briefly back to life with just a simple touch. Through the years, Ned has learned to live with his unique ability, and puts his gift to good use, working with his only friend, a private investigator, to crack murder cases by asking victims to name their killers. But the tale gets complicated, as all tales do, when he saves his childhood sweetheart and she miraculously stays alive. Life would be perfect, except for one cruel twist: if Ned ever touches her again, she’ll lose the life he gave her, for good this time. There’s always a catch…

I absolutely adore Pushing Daisies. I was one of the fortunate ones to see it at Comic Con, and have been hooked ever since. Awesome show, great cast, can’t wait for more!!
Watching it for the second time tonight, just as enchanting is the first! I’m catching so many details that I missed the first time. All I’m hoping for in the future is more of the same but much more Kristin Chenoweth.
I just got done watching the pilot and I loved it.
So many quotables and the colours were beautiful.
“Bitch, I was in proximity.” -> Died Laughing.
I absolutely loved the “Pie-lette”- it aired yesterday in Canada and I can’t wait to watch the American broadcast this evening! Just a beautiful, wonderfully unique show, and the preview for next week leaves me extremely excited. Most certainly one of the best hours of television I’ve ever seen; this show has such a wonderful cast and premise that it would be a crime for it not to survive. Fingers crossed that it reaches the audience it deserves.
I loved it! Definitely my new favorite show!
I am in LOVE with this show. Like Real Love. I can’t get over it. Lee Pace is my new boyfriend. For Sure!
Thanks you guys for giving us a venue to discuss this brilliant show.
And there we have it. The first episode of Pushing Daisies. I’m glad that you all are liking it so far. Any favorite parts?
Aren’t you just enamored with Ned & Chuck?
Oh my GOODNESS.
I’m sad they deleted the ‘Didn’t want to assume’ line, but I loved the new Pie Hole shots! AND! The previews for next week have only made me MORE excited for this show, which I’m not sure was possible. SO MUCH LOVE.
I still absolutely adored it! I was able to see an advanced copy of the show, and even though it had been about a month since I’d seen it, it felt like much less time. The balance the characters provide for each other is perfect. I’m having trouble articulating my thoughts (yet again), but I will say that I’m really looking forward to seeing where they take Emerson. I feel like there’s a lot to his character that has yet to be explored/revealed.
This is a brillant show! It’s absolutely amazing! I love the plot and characters. The wait was worth while!
Great show!
Favorite line (other than the obvious ones): Please don’t attack the window treatments.
I am so thankful right now for this show.. I can’t stand to watch any more of the drama/sex/adultery triangles that are premiering on ABC (and every other network right now).
This show was so refreshing and quirky and original, I couldn’t take my eyes off the TV for the whole time! I love love LOVED it!
“Please don’t harm the window treatments.”
Can I get an AMEN!
My roommate and I LOVED the premiere. The writing is magnificent. Favorite line of the night: “Bitch, I was in proximity!” Poor Emerson was so close to death. The acting was fabulous, and Lee Pace might just be my new favorite TV boyfriend. I’ll definitely tune in next week to see what happens. Oh, and the “love monkeys” were too cute!
Kath, er, Chuck…I LOVED everything about it. Absolutely everything . From the superb narrating, to the dialogue, to the bright colors, the perfect casting and the two lovebirds. Wow…they are giving Jim/Pam a run for their money…Although my loyalty to PB&J stands. It’s like Amelie for American audiences.
I’m smitten. Best pilot of the season hands down.
Just for you…here’s an AMEN!
Do you guys think the show lived up to the hype? It’s so nice to finally talk about it with everyone. And next week’s episode is amazing and there is some crazy stuff that happens that you’re going to love.
Hooked, instantly. It’s quick, witty, beautifully designed visually - love the music too, and that’s IMPORTANT - sounds decidedly Elfman-ish; in fact the whole thing has the feel of a Tim Burton movie turned TV, and that is a very good thing in my book - and very, very sweet (as pie? Just watch THAT become the most overused simile in this fandom, ha!).
Very pleasantly surprised that I don’t hate Chuck (I really, really like her, in fact) - I usually am at least annoyed by female leads; not quite sure why that is. And Ned is just adorably socially… I don’t want to say “inept”, but… unsure of himself. Really I just heart every member of the cast (CHENO-FRICKING-WYTH!). There’s absolutely nothing I would change about this “pie-lette” - I just hope it keeps up the awesomeness.
I am already SO in love with this show!! Now I have something to look forward to on Wednesdays
I can’t believe it’s finally aired. Fingers crossed that people aren’t lying about in a swoon haze, unable to come here and chat about the show!
My favorite comedic part is when Aunt Lily loses her eye. There’s something so genius about the ridiculous amount of litter that flies up and Swoosie’s whimpered “Ohhhh”
My favorite swoon worthy moment is Ned saying: “It’s magical!”
Runners up: the emotional heimlich, “that’s how I roll” and the sight gag of Olive next to Ned.
Oh and every single time they show the news footage photo of Chuck with the lobster bib, I pee myself just a little.
totally up to the hype. lee pace is like john krasinski when he met jim halpert.
pb&j loyalty here too, but Chuck and Ned are a close second already!
Absolutely enchanting! I loved every minute…kept me intruged the entire time. I definitely laughed out loud more than once.
Stepliana - what was the “Didn’t want to assume” line…I”m blanking.
favorite part: when Aunt Lily can’t see Chuck standing on the other side of the door. genius.
I’m so glad this has finally aired so that I may freely talk about it and use ,”Don’t be all judgey judge.”
I loved it! I was even able to get my mom to watch with me and she thought it was cute also. We both agree that The Pie Hole is quite possible the best name ever for a diner.
Oh, Ned, I forgot, “That’s how I roll.” I love the delivery and timing of that line.
It was beautiful and definitely lived up to all the hype, it was like being transported into a cute Seussian world, absolutely cute and definitely endearing. I laughed, I awhed, and I’ll definitely be tuning in next week. I’ve been waiting since June for this and I’m ready for more!
(It was the scene with the monkeys, when they held their own hands, and then they pressed their hands agains the wall that did it for me, I melted, a complete pile of goo). Plus, the supporting cast is amazing. Fabulous programme all around.
Second time seeing it and I’m even more in love than the first time. The writing is fantastic (emotional heimlich!, that’s how I roll!) and the acting is great. Chuck is a character all on her own. It’s a very different show than what’s already out there, but I think it’ll be around for quite awhile.
The aunts amuse me. The bit about being able to hold her breath — genius! I knew there was a reason they were synchronized swimmers…
I’m utterly in love with the show from this one episode. I actually haven’t been watching the hype up until now, didn’t even have a clue that the show was premiering until yesterday, but I’ve gotten so caught up that it’s a little overwhelming.
I’m loving the narrative style, and the humor! Oh my, the humor. Ned’s reaction to putting that man in the alley back to rest? Priceless.
Goodness. I’m still buzzing, and heavily feeling the urge to go call my friends and fangirl my little heart out.
Chuck is a fantastic character, adorable and upbeat. The aunt’s had me chuckling the entire way through, especially that eyepatch! Cod is great, especially that hug in the car, and, well, the narrator is Jim Dale. If that didn’t win me over, nothing would.
Wonderful. Just wonderful. Wicked good job, guys!
I feel all warm and fuzzy! That was WONDERFUL! I hope they show the episodes online or repeat the pilot so I can get my friends addicted as well. I can’t wait to tell everyone about this adorable show!!
“Pie-lette” was just so sweet….When I first read the whole show premises, it didn’t really make a whole lot of sense on paper, but now that I’ve watched it, I have to say that ‘Pushing Daisies’ is my new must-watch show of the season. It’s just so different from anything that I’ve seen in a while…it’s sweet, and funny, and a little sad at the same time. The characters are all likable and easy to relate to at a basic level, the pie aspect is just adorable, and Ned is one of the sweetest TV heroes I’ve seen in a while. I love the idea of the narration, which gives it a ‘twisted fairy tale’ feel about it too….I officially love ‘Pushing Daisies’, and cannot wait until next Wednesday for episode two.
The monkey kiss was adorable.. Pretty much all of Lee and Anna’s scenes are wonderful.
I took this photo at the panel, they’re just staring at each other. Feel free to snag and iconize.
Here
What about the Aunt’s? Too quirky or simply divine?
I agree that when Aunt Lily can’t see Chuck because of her eye patch, sheer hilarity! Perfect.
I already left a brief reaction to the episode yesterday on another post, thanks to an earlier broadcast. But I rewatched it on the ABC broadcast.
I know the whole premise of the show is that these two people are so meant to be and can never touch, oh woe is them, but oh gosh, this is going to be some major angst! Not just felt by the characters themselves but on the part of the viewer. As a person who has been a fan of TV couples where you’re always vying for *something*, this is going to be one of situations where it’s all left to words and looks, etc, and reading into these things to get our fangirl “giddy” on, so to speak.
Good thing about this first episode is that there is SOMETHING that hooks a viewer instantly, well at least from my perception. That may not be the case for other new shows this fall, like Private Practice IMO, so hopefully it’s a sign that it will survive. I would hate to think about how messy a “Save Pushing Daisies” campaign would be. Sending in daisies? Or pies? Or monkeys? I don’t know, but it probably won’t be as effective as peanuts.
Here’s the one bad thing about this show for me… it spoils me for any other show on the same night. I’m too busy sitting here mentally drawing little hearts around Ned and Chuck in my head to concentrate on my 9PM shows.
Was this a Tim Burton movie squeezed into an hour? It sure felt like one! I kept thinking I was watching Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. Which I loved too.
I saw this pilot about a month ago. I loved it then and I loved it again tonight! I can’t wait til next week when I finally get to see something new! I love everything about this show. The Amelie feel to it, the adorable Lee Pace, the quirkiness of Kristin Chenoweth, and the luminous Anna Friel. Even the narrator makes me giggle with delight. Favorite thing…hmm…its hard to choose…I love the scenes with young Ned and Chuck - but I always love seeming destined couples…so the idea that they were meant to be even when they were young just brings out the awwww in me!
I NEED this show to do well - please oh please - be a hit!
Linda - Who is Liam? I’m confused.
I loved the symmetry of the “only a prince would know how he felt” and then later “only snow white would know how she felt.” This truly is an adult fairy tale.
Emily,
That’s one of my favorite parts of the show and I was hoping that it wasn’t overlooked.
I am so smitten with this show! Every single frame was a work of true art and I cannot wait for more. This is how T.V. should be. The entire cast sparkles, the writing is brilliant and the look of the show is spectacular. I was so heartbroken when Wonderfalls was canceled but I feel like television karma has come full circle now that a Bryan Fuller show is on the air again.
“That’s how I roll.” AWESOMETASTIC!
Kath, It took me watching it the second time to catch it…which makes me want to watch over and over again to see what other wonderful small moments I might have missed!
This was fabulous! What a great adult show that is fun, inquisitive, fanciful and filled with witty repartee. Full of hidden quirks and obvious imaginative plot twists, this certainly is for the thinking audiance. Loved it! Can’t wait to see more! Loved Lee Pace in Wonderfalls (also quirky) and am so glad to see him receiving his due!
so i don’t have TiVo, and it doesn’t look like abc.com will be replaying episodes. dangit :-/
This is my new favorite show of the season BY FAR. Love love love it!!! And call me silly all you want, but I totally teared up at the end when Ned and Chuck held their hands behind their backs pretending they were holding each others.
Seriously gang, when Kath (Chuck) and I say we’ve seen this 10 times already, its not a lie. We still talk about what we find each time we watch.
Like how many people caught Ned’s eye twitching on the bus as they’re heading to meet Chuck in a casket for the first time? It’s before Emerson ever calls Ned out for having that telling trait and details like that are wonderful.
This show is so intelligent, and so different from what’s on television right now. Way to bring that escapism back! The colors are amazing, and Jim Dale brings a very fairy tale quality to it. And those looks Ned gives are adorable! Great job to everyone involved:)
OK - you can start the “I told you so’s”. It was THAT good. I really really liked it. Nothing is similar on tv today. THANK YOU!
JennyL, I’ll say I TOLD YOU SO even though I never did because if I knew you in person… I’d so have told you so. Love that everyone is reacting positively.
Told you so
I really hope that all of you will bookmark ThePieMaker.com and make it your new home for all things PUSHING DAISIES. We’ve got a ton of great stuff planned for Pushing Daisies fans. Just you wait…
Y’all are the best!
Loved every minute of it. My sister actually told me to tune in tonight. I was a little wary at first….It seemed rather odd. But after hearing more and more reviews..I watched. The SECOND the whole pie-making aspect appeared, I fell in love.
It’s a romantic comedy/drama. Best of all, its an hour.
Favorite part of the show: when ned and chuck touch the wall (sounds odd…but hopefully everyone understands)
Wow! I have heard such great things about this show for quite a while and even so, I was totally impressed and overwhelmed by how great it was! Totally in love.. And I needed a new show in my life after Gilmore Girls ended last May.
How did so many of the people commenting here get to see the show in advance though?
funny, smart and all together creepy make this a show not to miss! Wednesdays just got a whole lot better for television!!!!
I’ve already watched it twice and I’m gonna watch it a few times more! I just hope I’m not disappointed with the number of viewers tomorrow.
I was lucky enough to see this at Paley, and it was just as wonderful on 2nd viewing.
The romance is so perfect and is probably going to kill me(in a good way). Perfect casting and so much chemistry.
Loved Lee on Wonderfalls and so glad he is back on t.v.
Tamara, the network did a bunch of public screenings, the showed at Comic-Con, in a cemetary… We’ve posted about all of them so look through our older posts!
You guys are amazing!
AHHHH! i absolutly love it, and woah! ned’s quite a cutie isn’t he…lol…but the story line is just so perfect, it’s almost as if it was written by a team of (ahem…darkly hilarious) angels! i can’t wait for next wednesday! WOOT! i’m just soo hyped i don’t even know if i’ll be able to sleep tonight! well, till then i hope you all enjoy your pies and i’ll see you at the pie hole next wednesday!
byes!
I thought the pilot was AMAZING. It was so funny and charming, and the entire episode was just artistic. It’s definitely going to be part of my must-see-tv.
I really enjoyed the premiere - it was quirky and fun and was a great escape from some of the dreary crime shows that are out there. I found it had a real Tim Burton feel to it - I’m a fan of his films so it was fun to watch!
I giggled throughout it and can’t wait for episode 2!!
Loved it. This is the best pilot since 2004 (Veronica Mars & Lost). As much as I loved Dead Like Me and as much as I really loved Wonderfalls, I think this show has the potential to be Bryan Fuller’s best, and that’s saying a lot.
Absolutely agree on the romance being perfect, I’m not a huge fan of romance in my shows, but this was so sweet and beautifully acted, I couldn’t help but fall in love with it.
I LOVED it. It’s so different, and so refreshingly amazing. It’s nice to see something so smart on television.
i’ve heard a lot about the series and was excited about the first epsiode. I am so glad to say that it was more than what I had expected! The show totally reminds me of Love Me If You Dare, a french film.
The fantastic cinematography, the amazing high saturation, and the fabulously characters of the show = A PLUS.
LOVELOVELOVE!
mwah
So Pushing Daisies has officially begun. And I couldn’t be more excited, jubilant, or content.
Simply put, this show is perfect.
I had watched the pilot several times before tonight, but watching it live was still an incredible experience. There were at least three times in the show that I turned to my mom, let out a giant sigh and said, “this show is perfect.” There is literally not one thing I would change.
I’m a huge tv fan and have watched hundreds of shows in my lifetime. And I have fallen in love and become obsessed with tv shows before. But I’ve never felt this way about another show. Even the shows I completely love… there’s usually one thing I would change. Or there’s scenes that don’t wow me. Or there’s lines that just don’t seem to fit. But every single word, twitch of the eyebrow, inflection of the voice… every single little thing is perfect. At least once a scene, a line is uttered that instantly becomes one of my top 50 favorite tv lines.
There’s no way I could ever explain just how much I love this show or how much it means to me. In my wildest dreams, I could never imagine a show this perfect, this vivid, with characters I instantly love and care about. With a couple that I immediately feel the agony for. It’s simply fantastic!
I was very lucky to have been able to the see the pilot in advance over the summer, and boy, did it it not lose its charm over the many (and I do mean many) re-watchings, including tonight. I was absolutely giddy being able to see it on my larger television screen. I e-mailed a lot of my friends and family to watch it, so I’m hoping at least one person saw it and enjoyed. That’s really all it takes for me. Just one person.
I had been excited about this show ever since it was announced, because I’ve been a fan of Bryan Fuller’s past projects for quite some time (although, I didn’t watch Wonderfalls until after Pushing Daisies was announced and was curious about Lee Pace - and I’m so very glad I did, because he is wonderful in both). Fuller just never disappoints and this definitely fits the bill. It’s fun, it’s quirky, it’s different, it’s so unlike anything on television these days. That’s what makes it stand out for me. This site has been bookmarked on my computer for ages now and I’m so glad people are loving this show as much as I am. I really hope ABC gives it a chance to find it’s audience and it doesn’t become over-hyped, because I’m not sure I can handle another Fuller cancellation disappointment. My heart couldn’t take it
sorry, i’m back i just am sooo infatuated with this Burton-esque television series…its soo intellectually witty…i also love the set design because its like dark but colorfull all rolled into one…sorry i’m acting like a 16 year old girl but i have a good excuse…i am one lol…i’m just finally sooo happy i don’t have to put up with all these dimwited reality shows…but the sad thing is what am i supposed to do for the other 6 days and 19 hours lol…oh well i would just like to thank the cast and crew for actually bringing this little slice of [refreshing, sweet, awesomly breathtaking, beautiful] pie…thank you with all of my heart and soul…lol…
Don’t apologize for coming back. We love to hear from everyone. And you know what I’m really loving right now? That all of you have such insightful commentary on the show. There are so many layers to it, and I really look forward to watching with you each week.
And don’t forget that everyone that’s left a comment will be eligible to win Official Pushing Daisies Crew t-shirts and an autographed script of tonight’s season premiere. That’s how we roll here on ThePieMaker.com
I absolutely loved it. I will definitely be watching this season. It is so fresh and original, yet still familiar and light and fun.
I forgot to mention some of my favorite lines:
“It’s magical.”
“I’d kiss you if it wouldn’t kill me.”
“Don’t attack the window treatments.”
And “I’m kind of tired from chasing your coffin…” always makes me laugh out loud.
And I love Ned’s stammering, “When you lived next door, I had a cru - I was in lo - you were my first kiss.”
I also love the storybook elements and the repeating names. It adds such magic to the story. “Couer d’ Couers”, “Boutique Travel Travel Boutique”, “The Darling Mermaid Darlings.”
ahh you answered me! now uber excited! i’ll never get to sleep now! thank you! you really have no idea what this means to me…you just made my next 6 days and 19 hours lol…i hope i win…but i wish everyone could…and also another one of my favorite parts was when the eye-patched aunt shot the killer and said “i can hold my breath for a long time” lol [or something along those lines]…i’m just so giddy…woah…its all just so overwhelming…
i mean’t now I’M uber excited [honest mistake] lol
I’ve been looking forward to watching this show since I saw the first preview of it over the summer. It did not disappoint tonight. “Bitch, I was in proximity.” and “I thought masturbation meant chewing your food.” were by far the funniest lines of the pilot for me. I can’t wait to watch how this show develops over the course of the season.
oh, and i have a question…about the character’s situation…what if ned has a glove on would he be able to touch chuck, or will it still kill her? just wondering? [sorry]
In a word of CSIs and Law and Orders, Pushing Daisies, for being a show about murder victims, is suprisingly refreshing. The dialogue is quick and smart while the vibrant colors are eyecatching. Of course, neither of these components would work by themselves but by adding such talented actors to the mix, Pushing Daisies is definitely a show that is going to keep me tuning in each week. The perfect mix of whimsy and crime solving. My only complaint is the time slot it’s been given - I do not believe it’s appropriate for an 8o’clock spot.
I absolutley adore this show! Its by far the most bizaare-ly unique piece of telivision out there. I love the film aspects of it. The bright pastel-y colors, the pies, the angles. Its truly delicious to watch!
Plus Ned and Chuck are too cute. I am converted! Pushing Daisies is my new favorite show!
oh! oh! another one of my favorite parts is hen ned “wakes” chuck from her eternal sleep, and she grabs his tie and bangs his head really hard against the top of her coffin lol, pure hilarity…sorry i’m addicted to this thing already, and i don’t think they make special gum for this either..lol
Pushing Daisies
Wednesday nights at 8:00/7:00c on ABC
Pegged as a “forensic fairy tale” and acclaimed by critics, Pushing Daisies is easily the best new television show of fall 2007. It’s not very often I become instantly enamored with a new show, p…
Another question that’s been nagging at me…will Ned’s father come into play at some point? I think the only mention of him is that he was never around after he shipped Ned to boarding school, but he’s not dead.
When I heard about the show I was a little skeptical about it, however after I watched the pilot, I instantly fell in love with everything about it. And now seeing it once again on my television screen, it made everything 10 times even more better.
I really adore the relationship between Ned and Olive. The way she likes him and the way he just.. doesn’t is adorable. All the characters are very likable and I’m already anticipating the new episode. I hope this show stays on for as long as it can!
Emily, I don’t want to say too much so I will just say “YES”
Libra…Ned & Chuck can’t touch flesh but they can touch each other with the aid of gloves or other similar “accessories”. It’s going to get interesting.
I absolutely loved this show. It was so creative and the lead characters have such great chemistry.. I am just so sad that they can never touch!!!
I am soo looking forward to the rest of the season, and I really hope that enough people tune in and make it a hit..
Favorite Part = Anna Friel
Magnificent!!!! Not that this is the case but I enjoyed it as though it was my sixth time seeing it. And I’m sure I’d love it more with every re-watch.
And to The Beckert: Ned says “it’s symmetrical”. First kiss and last, two relating moments.
Just a little fyi!
wow, pretty soon the west coasters will be chiming in! Cant wait to hear their comments as well.
Wow. This show is AWESOME! I loved every minute of it! (And thankfully my kids went to bed without incident so I didn’t miss a minute!). It just aired on the West coast and it was so good! Better than everyone has been saying for months.
I think you just have to see it to understand.
I am really excited for the next episode. The pilot was great, but it will be fun for the whole hour to be devoted to furthering the story now that all of the characters have been established.
My favorite line:
“Does he touch her?” I chuckle every time I hear that one.
I also loved the visual of Ned “petting” his dog with that hand/stick thing. Poor Ned. What guilt he must have, but killing Chuck’s father was not his fault! He had no way of knowing!!!!
One final question… did Ned revive the guy that killed Chuck yet? Or is that next week? They seemed to have moved on to some scuba instructor, but Chuck’s murder isn’t really solved yet… Will that be the running story throughout the season?
The script, photography, and acting!!!! All of it was amazing!! I’ve been waiting for this show to premier for a long time and I was not disappointed. I’m not a big TV watcher, but I think I’ll make an exception in this case.
Sorry it’s me commenting again. I wrote a longer review to Pushing Daisies on my blog ( http://awesomeness.net/blog/archive/pushing-daisies/ ) and I did a trackback to this post, hope it’s okay.
And OHH, Kath, interesting tidbit about the no flesh but other glove like accessories are okay thing. It did not cross my mind. Are we going to have some scenarios with oven mitts? LOL. I can’t wait to see what the writers come up with!
Seat: You’re not predictable or anything.
This was my second (of many more before the second episode I’m sure since I made sure to record it) viewing and you guys are so right. I noticed so many little things this time! I’m going to have to watch again for the eye twitching on the bus though. I adore this show so much! All the little moments…like Ned’s face when Chuck tells the Boutique Travel Travel Boutique(how great are the names btw) lady that he was her first kiss….adorable! And I’m totally using “Don’t be all judgey judge” now lol. I just can’t wait to see what’s to come! Thanks for this site where I can share my obsession with all of you!
Beth, I was confused by this the first few times I saw it too. I think we’re actually done with Chuck’s death. Some guy found out about the monkey’s and they tried to kill Chuck. This guy is not dead so the case is solved? Not sure.
If someone happens to be reading this that has any insight on this please feel free to share.
woah, have you ever seen that batman movie with uma thurman in it, she played poison ivy, well in the movie robin wore some kind of wax on his lips and he could kiss her…hmmmm…this is getting my mind all jumbled up..but thank you for answering my question!
oh another one of my favorite parts is when they held thier own hands to substitute the other’s hand…my heart automatically went out to chuck and ned lol…and i also like the way the people go blue for like a split second after ned “kills” them again…and when the little squirrel died after he saved his dog…i need to stop…i’m so sorry lol…i feel all intrusive and stuff…
Gina: Is it “symmetrical”? I always thought it was “magical.” I’m going to have to watch it back with subtitles.
Another thing I love that is absolutely perfect: the guy that works at the morgue. “You the dog expert?” “No.” “Mm-Hmm”
I agree, Kath. I didn’t get the feeling that Chuck’s death was going to be an ongoing mystery. I suppose it may come up again if there was someone else involved in the monkey thing but, I think as far as Ned and Chuck are concerned, it’s a closed case. After all, the Aunts got the reward for finding who killed her.
libra: ooooh! THAT’s why the squirrel died. I never got that.
i fell in love with this show within the first five minutes!! i agree with everyone about favourite lines, but i have to add one… when chuck asks ned if its weird she wants her first and last kiss to be with him… and he says “no, it’s symmetrical”. ahhh, i love it!!
I remembered something else I love about the pilot. In the scene where they realize the monkeys are heavy and they go to smash them together… EVERY TIME I watch it I want to shout at them not to do that! I know it’s unlikely that the show would have them touch again any time soon but it freaks me out that they could accidentally slip there. It just amazes me that I’ve watched it over and over again and yet I’m still so drawn in that I forget that it’s not real.
I absolutely loved the show! Very inventive and funny, dark but somehow sweet and innocent at the same time. I’m a big fan of ‘twisted’ stories with a fairytale feel, so I’m really looking forward to what this series is going to have in store.
this is my first time seeing it…i feel so new too it lol…maybe thats why i can’t stop posting…i’m still in shock of how great the show was lol…
In the scene when Ned and Chuck almost kiss in the funeral home, Chuck asks if that’s weird and Ned says “No, it’s magical”….nothing about being symmetrical
the beckert: lol it’s cool, i didn’t know until i knew it killed some one in prioximity in 60 seconds…lol but i don’t know…i’m just glad there are others i can share my new obsession with…and its soo awesome that the STARS of the best show in the world are actually talking to us….woah…i feel like i just discovered oxygen or something..lol
I just got done watching the Pie-lette and I loved it! It was funny and sweet and definitely my favorite new show this year.
The Pie Hole made me laugh out loud. Seriously, was there ever a better name for a bakery? I don’t think so… I thought Ned and Chuck holding their own hands and pretending they were holding each other was so sweet. I also thought it was funny when he asked Emerson to give Chuck a hug and then said it was from him. Too cute. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
the beckert: i love the morgue guy too, i was cracking up, he was just like mmm-hmm…lol woah…
I loved the show!!!! I can’t wait to see how the relationships develop! Hopefully there will be a lot more of Kristin!!!!
“I used to think masturbation meant chewing your food… I don’t think that anymore.”-classic Cheno!!! Loved it!!!
LOVED IT! my favorite aspect of the show has already been mentioned…it’s just so new and different, not a twist on anything we’ve seen. don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of shows out there right now that i’m obsessed with…but this was like a breath of fresh air. wow, i’m hooked so easily.
this question may be a bit premature, but will this show be coming out on a seasonal dvd box set…?
I called my mom during the first commercial and told her that she needed to turn on ABC ASAP! Pushing Daisies is awesome!
After it ended, I needed an “emotional heimlich” to hold me over until next Wednesday…
I was just watching it back to check on the magical/symmetrical business and my closed captioning says “it’s magical.”
And then I got carried away and watched 10 more minutes…
Another favorite line: “It’s like acid reflux, but in my eye.” lol!
Finally, I hope….
It’s been years since I have found a show that I will schedule my time to watch. Premiers sound good and then disappoint.
This Pie-lette surpassed expectations. It has my benefit of the doubt. The premise is great, the execution was wonderful and the potential is all there. I look forward to next week and many more beyond. Please let it stay true to what I saw tonight.
and exaclty how tall is ned (or lee), because either he is outstandingly tall or his co-stars are just a bit vertically challenged? sorry i just haev so many questions…i’m naturally inquisitive..
This is why I’m such a tv junkie. I love movies too, but they are such a limited experience. Having the pleasure of enjoying this kind of creative material every week, every night, multiple shows per hour sometimes, is so much more satisfying.
I love this show! This is the first time to see it, and I love the quick, quirky dialogue and the relationship between ALL of the characters. I’m looking forward to learning more about Emerson and Olive characters.
Ned and Chuck… they are going to be the most sexually frustrated couple on TV, but I think that makes for good viewing and sweet and interesting story lines. HAHA There’s nothing more fun than sexual tension.
I will, however, mention for “the powers that be readin’”, that I invited my mom (55/conservative/midwestern) over to watch it and she found some of it a little offensive for the 7 o’clock family hour. I think the dog getting hit by a semi turned her off, and possibly the hole in the dead/alive man’s face… I thought it was funny… everyone/canine is back where they’re suppose to be! All is well!
I hope they keep Sonnenfeld on for the whole season. Is anyone on here old enough to remember Sonnenfeld’s show Maximum Bob? I loved that show too, and am feeling a similar vibe from Pushing Daisies… I pray that this show will go for as long as they want it to, unlike Bob!
Yay! I wanna see the next one.
emily: i completely agree
To answer an earlier question, “Didn’t want to assume” line was originally in there when Emerson and Ned are sitting across from the Aunts:
“Do you like girls?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Didn’t want to assume.”
*Ned cocks head at her*
This show is extraordinary in every sense. I immediately fell in love with absolutely everything all over again even though I have seen the pilot so many times. The premise is beautifully original and truly like a fairytale. It makes me feel as though I am whisked away to another world, a world that I wish I could visit! Pushing Daisies takes away all the stress I have built inside and I don’t feel tired anymore when I watch it. It has all the perfect ingredients and I can’t wait till the next episodes so that I can share this magic with all the other fans!!
P.S.
I wish I could have gone to comic- con or to the graveyard premiere, it would have been so great. I’ll just pretend that I went with all of you lucky people by living through your own accounts, lol.
I knew I was going to like the show, but I didn’t know exactly how much I would LOVE THE SHOW. It was SOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!! And yeah, I’m a little bit in love with Lee Pace.
Holy pie! That was brilliant! The pies weren’t the only reason I drooled; Lee Pace is too dreamy. My only complaint was that there were too many commercial interruptions -_-. Disregarding that, it was perfect. The soundtrack was awesome, and the casting was excellent. I do wonder who dies in place of the fruit Ned brings to life, though.
As for next week’s preview, I love Cod’s screaming. ^ - ^
It was amazing. New favorite show for sure. Masterfully blending myth, fairy tale, romance, and mystery, Pushing Daisies is one for the ages. A classic.
I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!! i’m so hooked already just cuz of the cast, (especially lee pace) the storylines, the romance and the beautiful colors. i cannot wait to see all of the episodes and i pray it lasts as long as it can. keep watching everyone so those ratings stay up!!
Lintendo, the fruit revival and its proximity death will be revealed shortly. It’s very fitting.
I LOVE this show!!! It’s like a fairy tale and the narration is just perfect. It’s so sweet and then completely hilarious the next moment. Like the aunt not being able to see Chuck because of her bad eye. Cracked up!!! I think one of my favorite lines was when Ned was explaining how a person dying after one minute is due to a proximity thing, Emerson goes, “Bitch, I was in the proximity!”. Can’t believe he said that!! LOL!!! I just love the super sweet moments between Ned and Chuck, like them touching hands through the bedroom wall. Swoon times infinity….
ok well i have to sleep now..thank you all sooo much…bye and goodnight…
I think this is the best “pie-lette” I have ever seen for a series. Most shows, I have to watch at least a couple episodes before I know whether I like it or not. Not PD. I fell in love immediately. The cinematography, the directing, the voiceover, everything is just amazing! After waiting for months for the premiere, I can’t wait to see the rest of the season!!!
I was able to watch on HDtv definitely worth seeing in that format. Beautiful. The whole family got together, had pie, laughed, awwwed and loved it.
we’ll be back next Wednesday ready with our pie to see what is next!
Find Your Magic Place……………at Pushing Daisies
Welcome West Coasters, just a reminder that anyone who posts here tonight is entered into our Exclusive Pushing Daisies Contest where we’re giving away official crew shirts and an autographed copy of tonight’s “Pie-lette” script.
Enjoy reading all the comments so far and for all of you who have already commented… wow, Chuck and I are so thankful and happy you’ve developed a TV Crush on Pushing Daisies.
Thanks for the info, Ned. Oh pie-ey (pun on pooey, har har), that means I have to wait until next week to find out
I forgot to mention my favorite quote.
When Chuck asked Ned if it would be weird if Ned was to be her first and last kiss, he responded with a “It’s symmetrical.”
Classic
Everything was uber fantastic except one thing: the digital yellow flowers.
lintendo, i thought that’s what he said too, apparently not! i think i like the symmetrical line better, lol!
I absolutely loved it. The quirky narration, the bright colors, the humor (”Bitch, *I* was in proximity!”), the love, Kristin Chenoweth …
Honestly, I haven’t followed a television series since my freshman year in highschool (am now a college freshman). Pushing Daisies is totally worthy of my infatuation.
This show is captivating. It reminds me of a very odd relationship that I find myself in presently. It’s romantic and quirky, and I’m in love!
The pilot was absolutely phenomenal! Unfortunately I missed the panel at Comic-Con but I’m sure glad I was able to watch it tonight.
I’ve been waiting for this day for so long! I’ve been looking forward to watching the show again since Comic-Con!
It was wonderful!!
My favourite moment was when they held their own hands and looked at each other as well. Adorable. Who thought a morgue could be romantic?
As for the fruit, definitely curious about that- my guess is that insects die.
Saw the screening of the pilot back in July at Comic Con. Having met all the cast there, I couldn’t wait for the real premier. It was as charming, cleaver, and entertaining as my first viewing. The only difference was that the commercials seemed extra long as I anxiously anticipated the next scene.
My favorite part is the line about holding her breath for a long time.
I love Ned and Chuck!! This is the “pie-lette”, so I hope there is a little less narration and a little more action in later episodes.
The story says the aunt couldn’t see the “living again” Chuck because of the eyepatch. But her eyepatch is on her right eye, and chuck is standing on the right, behind the door….so actually, based on perspective, her left eye should have been able to see Chuck.
I also couldn’t help noticing the towering platforms Anna was wearing to make up for their height difference. so adorable!
Before tonight, I had seen PD twice - once at Comic-Con, and once at a screening in L.A. And every time I watch it, it gets better and better, and I notice things I didn’t notice the previous time. I find PD refreshing, because it’s unlike anything else on Tv, and it’s so smart, funny, colorful, and I immediately connected with Ned and Chuck, and their plight. I love how even though they can’t touch, they are still touching each other in an emotional sense, and that they can be so happy to just be near each other. I loved the Pie-Lette so much, and I have been telling all my friends about how amazing the show is.
Good morning, sweet dreams of pies, emotional heimlichs, lee pace and everything Pushing Daisies…
Fingers crossed for the ratings!
I have one nagging worry about it. The whole time I am sitting there nervously watching and hoping they wont accidentally bump into each other. But I am relieved to know that its only flesh touching flesh that will kill her again. Now I am not as nervous about them bumping fully clothed. Another thing I have been wondering about is if she is now immortal or will just live a long time or what. The dog seems to have lived longer than normal.
So many funny things, I couldn’t believe how good this show was. I loved the “Boutique Travel Travel Boutique” and the “Darling Mermaid Darlings,” but my favorite line had to be “I’ve been ruminating. And i mean pondering, not chewing on chud.”
I didn’t mention this last night, but another thing I love about this show is the colors. Everything is so vibrant from the aunt’s house to the flowers in the field. This show is a feast for the eyes, and I just adore that. It kind of reminds me of BEETLEJUICE.
Also, when they showed Ned at The Pie Hole with a golden at his feet I was wondering if that was his childhood pet that he brought back to life. Then I thought no way b/c at some point that dog would have bumped into him or licked him or something. Ends up that dog really is his dog from when he was 9 years old. So does that mean that in theory this dog can live forever? Will the dog ever age or always be as he was at 3 years old? I found that really surprising but also sweet, b/c I’m a dog person.
WOW!!! I loved it the first time I saw it and I loved it even more the second time around! Lee Pace is adorable and the entire story is magical in the best way possible. This is 1000% my favorite new show of the year!!!
Wow. Kath!!! I loved this show. Thanks so much for getting the word out about it.
Within the first five minutes of the pilot last night I was already thinking, “I love this show. LOVE IT.” The only other time that has ever happened to me was when The Office first aired.
I’m completely, utterly hooked. Completely.
[…] Pushing Daisies Why am I completely nervous to hear what you all thought of the show? I guess it’s just that I’ve been pushing it (no pun intended) for so long that if you all hated it I would feel like my credibility is shot and you all would never trust another word I said about TV….ever. (Was that dramatic enough for you.). I must thank all of you who shared your thoughts on last night’s “Pie-lette” over at my new site ThePieMaker.com. I loved the episode! I called my mother after it was over and she kept going on and on about how much she liked it. It was awesome.
By far the most visually stimulating show I have ever watched, and I loved it! I hope they are able to keep that piece of the show going. I also adore the narration of Jim Dale, although I was taken out of the show a bit at the beginning since I associate his voice so much with Harry Potter. Finally, thanks to Ducky for the great advice to put everything down and just watch. I have a habit of being on the computer or something else while watching TV. Looking forward to seeing how this show takes off. Hopefully the rest of America fell in love and will keep this show around!
I actually saw the sneak preview of this episode at Comic-Con, and knew nothing about it at the time — I was so surprised by how wonderful it was! For one thing, it’s just so pretty to look at. I love Lee Pace in this role, although I was already a fan of his from Wonderfalls. Definitely my favorite new show of the season, although I’m not sure about the constant voice-over yet. I know it adds to the fairy-tale feel, so maybe I’ll wait to decide how I feel about it after a couple more episodes.
I loved it!!! I was able to see it at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, but couldn’t wait to see it again. It was awesome. Can’t wait to see the other episodes!!!
[…] hope everyone has recovered from last night’s premiere of PUSHING DAISIES because this morning I’ve still got visions of sugar plum pies dancing in my head. For those […]
When I finished watching the Pie-lette last night I just sat there for a few minutes wishing it was next wednesday already. I am 100% in love with this show…and Lee Pace in particular! This is definetely going to be on my watch list as long as this show is on air. Can’t wait til next week!
It was like watching a Tim Burton film. I loved the part at the end when they made the monkeys kiss.
I am more of a Deadwood/darker TV fan but I LOVED this show as did my wife. I rarely watch hour long network dramas (including Lost, Heroes, Desperate Housewives) but this is DIFFERENT from anything I’ve seen in years.
Absolutely loved it - the actors, the narration, the set designs. shot selection (how often does one say that about a TV show?) … pretty much everything.
The whole show seemed to be more like a movie than run of the mill television. Better than most cable dramas, too.
Just watched it this morning and I think those who used the word “enchanting” hit the nail on the head. I loved the bright colors and the feel of it! This is actually a show I could watch with my grandma and not be embarassed!
[…] Pushing Daisies “Pie-lette” ratings: 12.83 […]
I actually got my husband to watch this with me, and I think he liked it more than me! I think I knew too much about the pilot to really enjoy it, so I’m looking forward to next week. If it was for GMMR and Kristin at E, I wouldn’t have tuned in to this show, it kind of reminds me of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Thanks for the reccomendation!
What a wonderful, original premise for a television show in the days of reality tv shmuck and prime time soaps. Bryan Fuller, who is never void of deeply character driven yet wholly fantastical television plots, has given us a gem. The amazing actors, the brilliant set design, and the witty light script all combine to create what I hope will be a powerhouse this television season.
And it’s not on FOX, so hopefully we won’t have another Wonderfalls.
Like many, I was worried that this show wouldn’t live up to its hype (no offense, Ducky), but it was even better than expected. Lee Pace is so adorable, just like a younger John Cusack and the love story is as sweet as his pies.
I was hooked from the first word out of Jim Dale’s mouth and I can’t wait for next week.
Thanks so much for this site.
I can totally see why you were so psyched for this show. It is witty, original, charming, quirky, magical, and brilliant to look at!
I immediately cared about the characters, which is a challenge in a Pie-lette. It struck the balance of setting the tone of the show while actually being a strong first episode.
In a word, I loved it. I have a Seaon Pass already.
Not to mention, I *totallly* wanted a piece of pie. For the entire episode. Almost sent out the husband down to Stop N’ Shop afterwards.
Hooray for that 12.83 rating! Hopefully next week viewership will increase, and this show will be on the air for a long time. Love the Jim Dale narration too. I’m an HP fan.
I watched “Pushing Daisies” for the second time, this time in front of my television instead of a screener. And I fell in love with the world that Bryan Fuller has created and the characters all over again. I was a huge Lee Pace fan when he played Aaron Tyler on “Wonderfalls” (killer show, buy it on DVD if you get the chance) and was absolutely thrown when it was announced he was going to star in this new fall show that showed a lot of promise. The cast is absolutely perfect from top to bottom, even the guy who worked at the morgue was hilarious even though he had but one or two lines! And the aesthetics and colors are so visually stimulating it makes me want to cry from the beauty! From the first scene on, I cared about these characters and I wanted to know more about them. I wanted to be immersed in their reality as they know it. Even when they spoke, I was struck by how witty and smart the dialogue was. The writers don’t dumb it down for the viewers and that in itself is a treat. Actually the first thing I did this morning was check the ratings and was happy that it got almost 13 million viewers. Solid start to an excellent program! I will definitely keep with it until the end.
I had high expectations after seeing all the ads and commercials, and reading articles and blogs. But I have to say, the finished product was better than I could have hoped. Let’s hope it stays on air for a long time to come!
oh my, I fell in love with this show in the first 10 minutes! Lee Pace is so adorable! The show is so quirky and it also has all the qualities a good show should have - romance, some action, some mystery and the drama that everyone craves. Not to mention the mise-en-scene, the sets all look great! And the writing is impeccable!
This has become my new favorite premiere this season!!
I loved Pushing Daisies! A magical show full of whimsical plot points and breathtaking colors. It was light even though it dealt with death. I have been telling all of my co-workers to watch and I think my entire office did cause I can’t go anywhere today where someone isn’t talking about it!
