PUSHING DAISIES Comic Con Panel Recap

So you’ve seen the pictures and hopefully you’ve had the chance to listen to the full audio of the PUSHING DAISIES panel at Comic Con. But we understand that some of you have to be a little covert and maybe can’t be listening while at work or school, so we wanted to post a mini-recap of the panel itself for your reading pleasure.
We’ve broken in out into two sections, the first being general highlights from the panel and the second section being spoilerish information. If you want to avoid spoilers just stop reading when we tell you to.
Bryan Fuller and the cast are excited about the Comic Con Panel…
- As happy as the audience would have been to watch the “Pie-lette” once again, it wasn’t in the original plans for Team Daisies. The panel’s opening video was supposed to be some footage from the PUSHING DAISIES Paley Fest panel, but as the now familiar scenes of the first episode aired Bryan Fuller and Barry Sonnenfeld rushed to the stage to stop the presses (or at least the video). Instead they showed the fantastic Season 2 teaser trailer which threw the already amped-up crowd into a tizzy. But not before Fuller was able to pimp the much anticipated launch date for Season 1 of PUSHING DAISIES on DVD (September 16th on DVD and Blu-Ray. Pre-order your copy here today.)
- As the cast was introduced by moderator Barry Sonnenfeld’s acerbic comments, many of them took the stage by running past the front row and slapping hands with the audience. I almost lost an eye due to the Cheno fans behind me but it would have been well worth it. (I could always ask Aunt Viv for a fancy new eye-patch).
- Anna Friel tried out her American accent on the crowd for a bit but we all quickly cheered her back into her British speak. (On a side note, Anna looked stunning in with her black dress and bright red lips)
- Chi McBride, who was decked out in a colorful tee and jeans quipped that he was dressed for Comic Con while some of his co-stars were red carpet ready. Kristin and Anna both sported fantastic little black dresses for the event all looked all kinds of glam.
- Barry Sonnenfeld read aloud a message that Team Daisies sexy mama bear, Ellen Greene, sent to the cast before their bus travels from L.A. to San Diego. She reminded them that the bus can get chilly so bring a sweater, and offered up some fun travel options including games and movies. She’s adorable!
- When asked by an audience member if fans would ever see a resolution of sorts to Ned & Chuck’s relationship, Fuller said, “I think you would get a resolution but in a way that would open it up for us to do features.” (Hells YAY!)
- Bryan Fuller said the idea to incorporate musical numbers into the show came after the casting of Kristin Chenoweth and Ellen Greene. But since then he’s heard both Chi and Anna sing on set, and Lee Pace croon in “Miss Pettigrew” so he knows the talent he has to work with if necessary. He hasn’t ruled out a musical episode of the show.
- There was mention of an incident during one of the first episodes where Anna and Lee convinced the director that it was a good idea that Ned and Chuk play slapjack (a game which involves people trying to slap playing cards, and ultimately each other’s hands, in order to win.) Lee said it was a bit of Russian Roulette for the pair. Barry Sonnenfeld was shocked that the two leads would want to take such a risk…if they touch the show’s over.
- A fan asked Kristin Chenoweth to sing a little tune and she belted out “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” like only she can. Listen to it here:
- As for the S1 DVDs that comes out on September 16th, there will be a bunch of mini documentaries that can be accessed at various times as well as some episode commentary from Bryan Fuller and Lee Pace.
- When asked if we will ever meet the “anti-Ned”, someone who has the power to kill with a single touch rather than make alive again, Bryan Fuller said “no”. He said it was all about keeping Ned special in this Daisies world, because really it’s all about Lee Pace.
SEASON 2 SPOILERS (Read at your own risk)
- In the first few episodes the gang will visit a nunnery, a bee factory, a circus, a dim sum restaurant among other places and that kind of trend continues. “Every episodes we go to a new world and get a new adventures.” said Fuller.
- In the nunnery, we will meet Pigby, Olive’s new pig friend. And while at the nunnery we get to hear Olive sing! No word on whether or not Pigby joins her in song.
- There will be a few new faces this season including guest star David Arquette who is joining the cast in a recurring role as Randy Mann, Ned’s new friend (check back to thepiemaker.com as we’ll have more on this character from our conversations with Bryan Fuller)
- Season 2 will deal with a lot of family issues. In addition to meeting Ned’s half brothers (who Lee Pace told ThePieMaker.com are being cast based in part on their eyebrows…ha), we will meet Dwight Dixon around episode 5. Dwight has a shared history with Ned and Chuck’s father. We’ll also be meeting Emerson Cod’s mother played by the fantastic Debra Mooney.
- Fans of WONDERFALL will have two familiar faces on PUSHING DAISIES this season. Diana Scarwid , who played Karen Tyler on Wonderfalls will be joining DAISIES for the first few episodes of the season. And Mary Ann Marie Beetle (played by Beth Grant), who appeared in the “Muffin Buffalo” episode of WONDERFALLS will be visiting PUSHING DAISIES. (We know why she’s there but we don’t know if we are privvy to spill it so we’ll find out and get back to you.)
- Bryan Fuller wasn’t the only one sharing the secrets, star Lee Pace hesitated a bit wondering what he could spill but then just said: “Yeah, I’m just going to say some stuff” and told us that the aunts come to The Pie Hole which causes a lot of trouble for Ned. He also told us that Chuck moves out. She moves in with Olive and there is a bit of a cat fight. Lee said the he likes playing Ned when he’s fighting to get the girl, and fighting to get Chuck back.
- On the aunts leaving the confines of their home, Swoosie Kurtz said, “I never thought we’d leave the sofa. There are a lot of surprises in season 2. I find myself at the nunnery with Olive and Pigby.”
- Although we know Young Chuck and Young Ned rather well, this year we’re going to meet Young Emerson and Young Olive, who Kristin Chenoweth told ThePieMaker.com is “the cutest little thing”.
- As for the budding romance between Olive Snook and Alfredo Aldarisio? That’s going to be put on hold as Raul Esparaza has just been cast in David Mamet’s “Spped the Plow” opposite Jeremy Piven. Bryan said they would love to have him back but they have to wait until he becomes available again.
- Although names haven’t been named, some of Kristin Chenoweth’s Broadway friends will be making appearances on PUSHING DAISIES this season.
- Continuing on the ‘family’ theme of season 2, there will be movement on the storyline established near the end of the first season about Emerson Cod and his daughter. Emerson wants to publish a pop-up book called “Lil Gumshoe” which is a how to guide for his daughter to find him.
- Pay special attention to the first episode of the season as it’s filled with clues. Fuller said it’s a word map for the entire season.
- Ned and Chuck will find new ways to “get cozy” this season. Bryan said they are working on all kinds of “contraptions”. He said we’ll see some affection with gloves, and also learn that Digby’s petting device isn’t just for Digby. And there was also talk of a plastic divider that will let Ned and Chuck spoon. Awww.
So there you go. I don’t think you can say that the cast held back…there was a ton of great information to get everyone excited about the S2 premiere on October 1st. Do your part…tell your friends to watch.
